Whether you are a professional or just an average Joe trying to capture great photographic images there are some things you simply must have. Yes, you can live without them but your work will suffer and people will run away when you break out the projector, scrap book album etc. Trust me.
I know these things. Most people just want to take great pictures without all of the trouble of setting up, taking down and composing. They believe it takes far too much time and the results don’t really matter. Oh contraire my friend. All of those things are important in photography.
You want to be the best that you can be and by using just a few simple, inexpensive tools you will be. My camera bag contains only three important pieces of equipment. First of course is the camera. Digital is my choice for any picture taking these days. The days of lugging a heavy metal 35mm camera are gone.
The camera I use now is digital and weighs less than ½ pound. Second in my bag of tricks is a good set of lens filters. With filters I can adjust for many situations that present themselves. If the sky is too light I can adjust for that. If the grass is too brown I can adjust for that too. And, if the sun is making my eyes hurt because it has decided to shine directly into my eyes there’s a solution to that also.
Using filters in your photography is important and can make the difference between a good photograph and a great one. My third and final piece of equipment is a flash unit that I can either use as a stand-alone unit or it can be attached directly to the hot shoe of the camera. Even if you’re shooting outdoors it is important to at least consider using flash.
The light from your flash can fill in dark spots even outside.
Never leave home without it. If you don’t have it with you, you can’t use it. At least give yourself the option. Now, get out there and create some memories for yourself, your family and anyone else you can convince to sit still for a few minutes. In today’s busy world it is always good to take a little time to enjoy all the beauty that surrounds you. You really can’t argue with that now, can you?
