Organize Photos for Easy Access

You must organize photos if you want to be able to find them easily. With modern digital cameras it doesn’t take very long to build up a large collection of images.

If you don’t keep them under control you can end up with a lot of photos spread out over your hard drive. This could create many problems when you want to find one specific picture or collection of pictures that you took last month or last year.

Perhaps you just haven’t been able to get around to taking care of this task yet. The problem is that the longer you wait the bigger the job becomes. So set aside some time to do this. It doesn’t have to be a whole day or week, but set up a number of short sessions comfortably spaced and you will have it done in no time.

The first question to ask yourself is how do you organize photos. In other words decide on which image organizing software you are going to use. There are quite a few programs out there, some of them for sale and others that are offered for free.

Make sure you thoroughly research the different programs offered and decide on which one is best for you. All of them will be able to handle .jpg files but not all will recognize the different RAW formats, if that is what you are shooting.

If necessary you can always use the software that came with your camera to convert the RAW files to .jpg. Just remember always save the original picture without any changes and do your work on copies.

When you come to organize photos it’s also important to take care of them right away. Make sure you transfer your images from the camera to your computer after every photo shoot. Don’t let photographs pile up in your camera’s’ memory and become a huge job later on.

This brings to mind another important consideration which is to decide on a filing system.

It’s not really a good idea to leave your photos named as they are by your camera. You should have them named and filed properly in order to find them easily when you need them. You may have your own ideas on filing, however I find the above system very efficient.

Another important aspect of dealing with your photos is archiving. This is one of the most important considerations. The worst thing that can happen is to lose your photos. Let’s face it hard drives fail and if you have your total collection on one hard drive you can be devastated by a single failure.

There are many great methods of archiving and you should make absolutely sure you take advantage of them. If you follow the tips about archiving you won’t have any worries.
